Did you know?

Golf arrived in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V. It was first played by nobles and other elitists of high society but is now played by a wider segment of the population. There are approximately 250 golf courses in Thailand. Destination diversity and the choice of golf courses throughout the country are key factors attracting the large numbers of visitors coming to play golf in Thailand. The most popular destination for golfing in Thailand especially for tourists is Pattaya in Chonburi Province, where there are over 20 courses. Thailand has a tropical climate featuring three distinct seasons. In most areas, the hot season extends from March to May; the green season from June to October and the cool season from November to February.

The 7,157-yard course was the venue for the 1997 Asian Honda Classic, where Tiger Woods cruised to a comfortable 10-stroke victory after shooting a final round of 68 for a 20 under-par total of 268 for the championship.

No matter where you are on the course, you are sure to enjoy nature at her best: exquisite lush green from the nearby forests – which comprise a rich assembly of trees such as the golden teakwood, the Dipterocarpus Alatus and many more other species.

Grand Prix Golf Club – 18 holes par 72 (7136 yards)

Grand Prix Golf Club is a well-conditioned golf course in Thailand’s Kanachaburi Province that will take the breath away. The course is set in a vast open space with panoramic views of Burmese mountain ranges in the distance. A large river bisects the course and adds to the native scenery. It takes around 30 minutes to reach the site from Kanchanaburi town or 2 hours from Bangkok. Grand Prix makes excellent use of significant mounding and undulations through the fairways and greens. Many holes have split fairways offering golfers both a more challenging and a relaxing approach to the greens. Multi-tiered greens have lots of break so it pays to select the correct club for each approach shot; otherwise 3-putts or worse is likely.

Banyan Golf Club – 18 holes par 72 (7361yards)

Built among a pineapple plantation, Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin opened in October 2008. Immediately following, the course was awarded 2009 Best New Course in Asia Pacific by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly. Since then Banyan golf course and clubhouse has consistently claimed ‘Top 3 in Thailand’ awards and been featured in the ‘Rolex Top 1000’ in the World. The world class 18-hole championship golf course was designed by Thailand golf course architect Pirapon Namatra from Golf East and is known to be one of the best layouts in the country. The course provides for spectacular mountain and ocean views from most all of the holes and is one of the best layouts in the area. Each hole has 6 tee boxes making the course more or less challenging depending on ability and tee selection. Strategically placed water hazards, waste bunkers, and sand traps are spread out throughout the course. Significant use of native pineapple groves make local fruits come into play if straying too far off the fairways. Lush Zoysia grassed fairways, a local grass but a rarely seen on golf courses in Thailand, are a pleasure to hit from as balls sit up nicely.

In 2012 Black Mountain was selected as one of the 100 best golf courses outside the USA by Golf Digest magazine. In 2014 Black Mountain hosted The Thailand Classic, the first European Tour event to be staged in Thailand. The Thailand Classic is now a major fixture on the European and Asian Tours.
